Phase One XF100MP Workshop - 16/07/16
People have been asking me about the workshop I attended recently, so here is a sample image I shot and two 100% crops. The image quality is incredible! Opening the file and zooming in to 100% is a jaw dropping experience. The files below are jpeg versions for the web but it will give you an idea. The original file has had no post production other than converting to a tiff in capture one. The tiff file of the shot is a massive 74cm x 98cm at 300dpi ,(with no enlargement) with a file size of 600mb. The RAW file is 113mb. Dealing with file sizes this big is going to be very slow unless your running a high spec machine!
I didn’t get chance to try all the features of the camera, but overall the build quality was good and the new Schneider lenses seemed very sharp. As someone who shoots traditional medium format cameras a lot, I like the option of a traditional waist level finder.
The same (Sony made) 100mp chip is now also available in the Hasselblad H6D-100c and there are rumours that the new version of the Pentax 645 Z expected in September will also use it and no doubt be very competitively priced. I would love to see a 100mp vision of the Hasselblad 50C, but there might not be enough demand to warrant this. I haven’t quite given up hope for a 6x6 sensor size digital back, but it looks to be some way off (if ever!) yet. Regardless, it’s a very interesting time for digital medium format.
You can find more info on the Phase One Camera system (and download RAW samples) here. Thanks To Chris Ireland at Direct Digital Imaging and Nathan D'Amour & Ian McManus for setting up the demo shoots. Model: Nicole Magnolia.
